As the days begin to get warmer, I’m reminded of how much I used to love summer. Don’t get me wrong, we’re still friends, it’s just that my tolerance levels for sunscreen application, short clothing and screaming at people to keep their hats on rapidly declines under the pressure of extreme heat.
A trip to the beach often takes three hours of planning and involves forgetting an item as I pull out the driveway approximately four times. There is never enough wipes and one child often views sand like a plague of locusts.
The end of spring in Melbourne is like weather bingo. One day you’re giddy with the sweet anticipation of balmy evenings and picnics in the park, the next you’re watching hailstones fall onto your car windscreen at the liquor store car park – wondering why the hell you didn’t pick up the wine you so desperately need after that long day at the beach yesterday.
Despite my fading affections for summer, I still treasure that anticipation. I love being able to run around the park at 7pm, eat fish and chips on Friday and not worry about the kinder drop-off in torrential rain. And for that reason these are some pre-summer items I’m currently enjoying (not sponsored)
1. Sun Sense Anti-Aging Face (approximately $12)
I’m not a big believer in spending a mint on day moisturisers. If it has 30+ and isn’t greasy it gets my vote.
2. Aveda Pure Abundance Hair Potion (approximately $40)
You only need a sprinkle of this powder on clean hair and it will instantly add up to 17% more volume.
3. Loreal Mini Nail Polish (between $6-$8)
I am a bit of a nail lacquer whore. I’ve cut back a bit but these minis come in a great choice of colours and they’re cheap so your spouse won’t suspect a thing when you put them through the chemist register with the other “essentials”.
4. Frank Ocean – Super Rich Kids
Currently my summer song of choice, and kudos to a Hip Hop/R&B artist that has the courage to talk about same sex attraction in a genre often referred to as homophobic.
Do you love summer? What’s your favourite season?
